The Bharatiya Janata Party has called a meeting of its parliamentary board in New Delhi [Images] at 5 pm to discuss its chief Lal Kishenchand Advani's [Images] resignation offer.

Advani resigned on Tuesday after coming under a sharp attack from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its allied bodies for his remarks praising Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

In another development, RSS chief K Sudershan on Wednesday afternoon issued a statement praising Advani for his performance as BJP president.

Sudershan also said that Advani's resignation was an internal matter of the BJP.

BJP vice-president Venkaiah Naidu said the parliamentary board will take a decision whether or not to accept Advani's resignation. He said former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will preside over the meeting.

Advani, earlier in the day, had said the circumstances that had led him to tender his resignation had not changed.

It is known now that Advani was particularly hurt when Vishwa Hindu Praishad leader Praveen Togadia called him a 'traitor'.

The BJP has since condemned Togadia's statement.
