Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to visit Maharashtra on Thursday to have a first hand assessment of the situation in the state in the wake of incessant rains.

Dr Singh also sent a message admiring the fortitude and tenacity of the people of Mumbai in coping with the floods triggered by heavy rains.

"The prime minister admires the fortitude, patience and tenacity of Mumbaikars facing the nature's fury," the Prime Minister's Media Advisor Sanjaya Baaru said.

The prime minister then spoke to Chief Minsiter Vilas Rao Dekshmukh on Wednesday and assured him of all possible help by the Centre to cope with the situation, official sources said.

If weather permitted, the prime minsiter may undertake the visit, the sources said.

Meanwhile a delegation of Shiv Sena parliamentary party, led by Anant Geete, met the prime minister to draw his attention to the devastation caused by the floods in various regions of the state including Konkan and Marathwada and Goa and sought immediate ad hoc financial grant of Rs 5000 crore.

The PM also told the Shiv Sena leaders that he had asked Union Ministers Shivraj Patil and Sharad Pawar, who hail from Maharashtra, to be in touch with the state government to ensure speedy relief measures.

Pawar, already left on a four-day visit to the affected areas of Konkan to assess the situation.
