Honda workers, cops clash

Workers of Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Ltd, demanding reinstatement of their colleagues, clashed with police on the streets of Gurgaon on Monday leaving scores of people injured.

The workers also indulged in arson.

Police charged with batons against the workers after a clash took place between them outside the mini-Secretariat where the employees had gathered for talks with the district authorities following their blockade of the national highway leading to Delhi.

The workers hurled stones and bricks at the police and the two warring sides took turns and charged at each other on the streets.

The workers also set ablaze some vehicles, including one belonging to the police, on fire.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagpravesh Dahiya, Head Constable Vijender and scores of workers were injured in the skirmishes.

While the injured were taken to various hospitals in the area, police detained hundreds of workers.

The employers had earlier taken out a march of the national highway linking the Delhi suburb with the national capital demanding reinstatement of their 50 suspended and four dismissed colleagues. The company had taken the action following a strike in its factory in Manesar in Haryana.

The protestors blocked traffic for several hours and burnt a motorcycle.

Communist Party of India member of Parliament Gurudas Das Gupta, who is also the general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, said 150 workers were seriously injured in the lathi charge.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said police and the workers had indulged in violence and an "unbiased" inquiry would be conducted into the incidents and culprits punished.

National Democratic Alliance Convenor and Janata Dal-United  leader George Fernandes termed as "barbaric" the police action against the workers and said his party would raise the issue in the current session of Parliament.
