Expelled Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane's scheduled rally at Goregaon in suburban Mumbai was called off due to security reasons, official sources said.

The sources said the situation had turned tense at Dadar in central Mumbai in front of the Sena mouthpiece Saamna office, where Rane held a rally earlier in the day.

"The decision to call off the rally was taken to avoid any untoward incident," sources added.

The police had earlier conducted a lathicharge following a scuffle between supporters of Rane and Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray at Dadar.
