Accidental firing by cop, 2 die

The Bhoomi Poojan ceremony, part of a Hindu ceremony held every year in Srinagar's [Images] city centre Lal Chowk, was disrupted on Thursday morning by accidental firing from the automatic rifle of a local cop.

Two people, including a station house officer, were killed and a deputy superintendent of police was injured.

Station House Officer, Maisuma Police Station, Ghulam [Images] Nabi Pare was killed and Deputy Superintendent of Police Ghulam Jeelani Baba was injured.

Border Security Force jawans, positioned nearby, mistook the firing for a militant attack and killed one Mohammad Ameen.

The head constable responsible for the incident has been taken into custody and probe initiated.
