Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh general secretary Mohan Bhagwat met RSS chief K S Sudershan at Nagpur on Tuesday and apprised him of the discussions that the organisation's top brass had with senior functionaries of the Bharatiya Janata Party in New Delhi on Monday.

Sudershan is understood to have deputed Bhagwat to lead the onslaught as the RSS mounted pressure on BJP chief Lal Kishenchand Advani to quit as BJP president.

RSS functionaries at the organisation's headquarters in Nagpur, however, have described the meeting between Sudershan and Bhagwat as 'routine'.

"Bhagwat is primarily based in Nagpur, the headquarters of the Sangh. Sudershan visits Nagpur often. So, whenever both happen to be in Nagpur, they meet and hold discussions. There's nothing new or extraordinary in it," an office bearer of the RSS said.

Significantly, Sudershan stayed away from the hectic deliberations that took place between the parent organisation and the political wing of the saffron brotherhood in New Delhi. According to sources, this was done deliberately as the RSS chief wanted to stay out of the actual nitty-gritty of the operation.

RSS functionaries also do not see anything significant in the fact that Sudershan did not attend the series of meetings in New Delhi.

"You have to look at the Sangh as a whole. The individual performing a certain task is not important -- it is the Sangh that is acting. The individual could be Sudershan, Bhagwat or someone else," an office bearer said.

The organisation's top brass is upset with George Fernandes [Images], convenor of the National Democratic Alliance over his statement criticising the RSS, it was learnt.

Fernandes issued a statement in New Delhi on Tuesday criticising what he said was the RSS leadership's attempt to assume a political role for itself by interfering in the functioning of the BJP.
