Cold wave intensifies in J&K

January 28, 2005 16:18 IST

Heavy snowfall and rains intensified the cold wave conditions in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed on Friday due to heavy snowfall since Thursday night, traffic officials said.

The 300-km highway was closed from Kud to Batote. The stretch between Ramban, Banihal and Jawahar Tunnel was also closed.

Jammu also experienced snowfall bringing down temperatures appreciably.

Heavy rains hit several parts of Jammu district on Thursday evening. The district received 20.6 mm rainfall.

Meanwhile, Kanpur recorded heavy rains on Friday. More rains are expected during the day, sources said.

Agricultural experts said the rains would be harmful for the mustard and potato crops.
