Nicobar Islands rattled by a series of quakes

A series of moderate intensity earthquakes rattled the Nicobar Islands on Thursday, the Met Department said.

A quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale was felt off the north coast of Little Nicobar Island at 0929 IST.

A second quake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, epicentered near the Camorta islands, was felt at 1052 IST.

This was followed by another jolt, measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, off the North Coast of Camorta in the Nicobar group of islands at 1227 IST.

Sumatra, the place of origin of the December 26 killer earthquake that triggered the devastating tsunami waves, was rattled at 0330 IST by a quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale.

A 5.7 intensity temblor had shaken the Car Nicobar Island at 2301 IST on Wednesday night, the Met Department said.
