Bahujan Samaj Party workers went on a rampage in Allahabad on Wednesday alleging that the cremation of party MLA Raju Pal was done without informing his family.

Over 200 supporters of Pal, mainly from his native village Neewa near Allahabad, indulged in heavy brick-batting, attempted to set a police station on fire and attacked the house of a local Samajwadi Party MLA's brother.

However, Inspector General of Police A C Sharma denied the charges.

He said that Pal's last rites were performed by his maternal aunt's son under tight security.

Police cordoned off the Dhumanganj police station area, where Pal was shot by unidentified men on Tuesday evening.

Unconfirmed reports said one person was killed in the mob violence, but Senior Superintendent of Police Sunil Gupta claimed he had no such information.

He added that security has been beefed up in the area.
