In a gesture of solidarity with India, which is coping with the tsunami disaster, US President George W Bush [Images], his wife Laura and ex-presidents Bill Clinton [Images] and George H W Bush visited the Indian embassy on Monday.

President Bush wrote in the condolence book signed by all four of them: "We pray for the victims of this terrible disaster and we stand firmly with the people of India as she recovers."

He said that he spoke to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] and assured that the US stood shoulder to shoulder with India.

He also thanked India for helping Sri Lanka [Images] recover from the disaster.

Indian Ambassador Ronen Sen said that the "genuine warmth" and concern shown by the US leaders was a "source of great strength and solace" to India.
