At least 82 people were killed and over 100 others were missing after a ferry capsized near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka early on Sunday.

The ferry got caught in a cyclone in Buriganga river in Narayanganj district close to Dhaka, officials said.

The ferry was about 30 minutes into its journey from Dhaka to the eastern town of Chandpur when high-speed winds struck just before midnight.

It capsized and sank near Pagla town outside Dhaka.

Eighty-two bodies have been recovered so far. Over a hundred people were still missing when reports came in.

Some passengers of the ferry swam to safety, the officials said. Authorities have ordered an investigation into the accident.
