Delhi University lecturer S A R Geelani, who was shot at and grievously injured in Delhi last week, moved the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the attack.

The apex court, however, refused to change the status quo of the probe and instead asked Delhi Police to file a reply on Geelani's special leave petition within a week.

A Bench comprising Justice P V Reddy and P P Naolker posted the matter for next week.

The plea was moved by Geelani's counsel Kamini Jaiswal.

Geelani alleged that the special cell of Delhi Police was behind the murderous attack and hence could not be expected to do justice to the probe.

The Bench also asked Delhi Police to file the status report on its probe next week.

The report was supposed to be filed on Wednesday (Feb 16).

Responding to the application filed by Geelani, senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, appearing for the police, stated before the court that since Geelani's statement was recorded only on Monday it would take a week to submit the report.
