Several Manipur organisations have called for a general strike on January 7 to protest against the Indian Army's human rights violations during a security operation at Jiribam in October.

All Manipur Students' Union and All Manipur Women's Social Reformation and Development Samaj said they will call a dawn-to-dusk strike protesting against the army's atrocities during Operation Tornado.

The two organisations said the government and the Manipur Human Rights Commission had failed to take any action in this matter.

They said various representatives of the government, MHRC members and non-government organisations had visited Jiribam and conducted on-the-spot inquiries about the operation that was conducted in the last week of October.

It was found that the army had stopped entry of people into the area and that the security forces molested and harassed women.
