Ex-gratia for 1984 riot victims announced

December 29, 2005 18:07 IST

The government on Thursday announced a package comprising enhanced ex-gratia and rehabilitation assistance amounting to about Rs 715 crore to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the package, which will entitle the kin of those killed in the riots to Rs 3.5 lakh in addition to what has been already given by the state governments, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said.

Those injured in the riots will be given Rs 1.25 lakh minus the amount already paid according to relevant court judgments.

Compensation for damaged residential properties will be paid at ten times the amount of compensation paid minus the amount already paid, he said.

Rehabilitation grant to 22,000 families, which had to move under duress from other riot-affected states to Punjab and are still living there, will be paid Rs 2 lakh per family.
