Councillor held in connection with stampede

A Chennai city councillor was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with Sunday's stampede at a flood relief centre that which claimed 42 lives, police said.

Police said Dhanasekaran, a councillor from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was arrested for allegedly 'spreading rumours', which caused the stampede.

Meanwhile, the DMK said the arrest was an 'alleged attempt by the ruling AIADMK government to malign the party'.
