Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli was taken into custody by the Mumbai police on Tuesday in connection with the assault on Nationalist Congress Party activist Sunil Rane over a property dispute. He has been charged with assault and intimidation.

Last week, Gawli was admitted to Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai for suspected malaria. Though formally arrested there on August 25, he could not be taken into custody for interrogation.

According to senior police officials, Gawli was taken into custody soon after he was discharged from hospital. Three of his supporters, who have been booked in the same case, are also in police custody.
