Few of Mumbai's residents knew of rivers that flowed within the city.

Thanks to years of encroachment, the Mithi river had been bottled almost completely. On the night of July 26, Mumbai paid the price. The river revealed its ferocious avtaar.

Another such river, the Krishna, that flows through the Borivali National Park, overflowed its banks. It went over the bridge, washing away everything in the vicinity. Though the water has now receded, the broken bridge is still littered with garbage. The plastic bags that killed Krishna are clearly visible.
