Is the ban on dance bars justified?

Last updated on: April 13, 2005 20:25 IST

The Maharashtra government on March 30 banned dance bars across the state, except Mumbai. The ban was extended to Mumbai on April 12.

The reason that the government gave for the ban was that these bars corrupt the youth.

Soon after the decision was announced, the bar dancers joined hands to oppose the ban. Most of them said they had families to feed and this was the only job which paid them enough. Some felt the ban would force them into flesh trade.
