September 18, 2004 14:26 IST

The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a self-styled area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen from a Srinagar hospital where he was undergoing treatment for a bullet injury.

Police sources said on Friday that Mohammad Yousuf Malik was arrested along with a relative Zahoor Ahmad Ganai soon after he got himself admitted in the hospital on Thursday night.

Malik, a resident of Check Rambirpora village in Anantnag district, had received the bullet injury in his left leg during an encounter with security forces in Kulgam early on Thursday.

He managed to evade security forces and reached the hospital for treatment. He was arrested following a tip off.

Doctors later operated on the militant, removed the bullet and saved his life.

Malik was undergoing treatment in the hospital under custody but his relation was whisked away for questioning, the sources said.
