Why did Manmohan give an interview to Panchjanya?

September 15, 2004 19:36 IST

That was the most asked question at the Congress media briefing at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday.

Reporter after reporter wanted to know the 'justification' for granting his first interview to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh mouthpiece. The RSS has repeatedly attacked the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance government.

"Nothing much should be read into it. It was a routine request by the editor of the journal for a meeting and the prime minister granted it. The editor wrote what transpired at the meeting," party spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters.

Some reporters said that it was the first interview  by any Congress prime minister to Panchjanya.

"I don't read too much into it (interview)," Natarajan added.

When pressed further on the issue, she said, "I have checked up the facts. I have this preliminary information. I will try to get more details and come back to you."
