September 13, 2004 18:49 IST

A district court on Monday granted bail to Avtar Singh, husband of athlete and CPI-M MP Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, and nine others arrested in connection with a sex racket in Singh's hotel.

Singh, the hotel manager, four men and four women had been arrested on August 15.

Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate, Barrackpore, G C Karmakar granted bail on security bonds of Rs 1,000 each and directed them to appear before the court on September 27.

Singh's bail plea had been rejected twice earlier.

Unlike previous occasions, there was no demonstration but security had been beefed up and prohibitory orders had been put in place around the court to prevent any untoward incident.

Earlier on September 3, Nationalist Trinamool Congress activists had fought a pitched battle with policemen outside the court premises when Avtar and the others had come to the venue for a hearing.
