October 23, 2004 16:54 IST

Thirty-two children have died of a mysterious disease, while several have been admitted to hospitals in western Uttar Pradesh over two days, official sources said in Ghaziabad.

Fourteen children have died in Khekra town, Baghpat district, eight in Muzaffarnagar and 10 in Saharanpur due to the disease that has symptoms similar to encephalitis, meningitis and cholera, they said.

Over 100 children were brought to healthcare centers and government hospitals in Meerut, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar and Garhmukteshwar districts with complaints of severe headache, fever and vomiting, the sources said.

The disease is a result of inflammation of brain membranes and patients generally vomit blood, S K Arora, director, health, Meerut division, said. The disease is prevalent among those residing in unhygienic conditions, he added.
