Landslides kill 11 in Guwahati

Some 11 people were killed in fresh landslides in Guwahati on Friday as heavy rains continued to lash the entire north-eastern region of the country for the third consecutive day.

Seventeen people died since Thursday in landslides. The army has been deployed in Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar, G S Road and R G Baruah Road areas to rescue people trapped in their destroyed homes.

Landslides killed six persons and injured two at Dhirenpara in Fatashil Ambari, three in Jorabat on the Guwahati-Shillong Road, two in Jyotinagar area and eight others in Red Cross locality in Chandmari, rescue officials said.

Guwahati was almost completely water-logged, including the state secretariat and assembly building areas.

The Doordarshan Kendra has been without power since Thursday, and all programmes, including news bulletins, were cancelled, officials said.
