PM has nothing new to offer: ULFA

November 23, 2004 15:27 IST

The United Liberation Front of Assam has said that there is nothing new in the statement made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his two-day visit to Assam.

The prime minister's statement that Assam is an integral part of India clearly indicates that the government is not ready to talk on the sovereignty issue, a caller identifying himself as ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua told a daily on Monday night.

"The comments made by the prime minister is not unexpected and not different from those of his predecessors. It is evident that the Centre's colonial policy will continue and despite his humble behaviour and approach, Singh cannot change this reality," Barua alleged.

Singh said on Monday that initial contacts had been established with banned outfit ULFA for holding peace talks.

He also rejected ULFA's demand for discussion on sovereignty saying "Assam is an integral part of India. I will make it clear that there should not be any doubt in the minds of the people in this regard."
