Of Bushisms and flip-flops

November 03, 2004 18:33 IST

Election Night 2004 has lived up to the hype by going down to the wire.

After months of relentless campaigning, it has finally come down to Ohio -- for President George W Bush, Senator John Kerry and all the comic shows in between.

The US Election: The Full Coverage

Indeed, the most relieving moments of this campaign often came from the likes of David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart and other of their ilk who turned a bitter, scratchy campaign into fodder for their comic genius.

So to help you get over your jitters over who would ultimately live in the White House for the next four years, we thought we would bring you some of the rib-tickling lines from TV shows.

Let's start off with Kerry's 'flip-flopping', which became a big issue during the campaign.

"John Kerry went duck hunting and he's doing that to fulfil his campaign pledge to hunt down the ducks and kill them wherever they are! Kerry did pretty well; he came back with four ducks and three Purple Hearts." - David Letterman.

"You see the pictures in the paper today of John Kerry windsurfing? He's at his home in Nantucket this week, doing his favourite thing, windsurfing. Even his hobby depends on which way the wind blows." - Jay Leno

"Kerry scored many points with voters and pundits by finally putting to rest criticism that he's a flip-flopper. Kerry said, 'I have one position on Iraq: I'm forgainst it.'" - Amy Pohler on Saturday Night Live's Weekly Update.

"Last week, Senator Kerry was eight points behind President Bush, today he is three points ahead. Is this the kind of indecision we want in a president?" - Announcer in a mock Bush-Cheney ad, Late Show With David Letterman.

Here's more on Kerry, but for a fair and balanced view, here's some on Bush.

"Earlier today, John Kerry went hunting for geese in Ohio, but President Bush says Kerry only did it for the photo op. The weird part is that Bush said this while wearing a flight suit and standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier." - Conan O'Brien

"This was the town hall debate, and Bush says he likes the personal feel of a town hall. There's something about getting out there and lying directly to people's faces." - Bill Maher.

"Political experts say President Bush was off his game. He looked distracted, confused, a little at a loss for words. Off his game? That is Bush's game." - Jay Leno, on the debate
