Delhi Public School has opposed selecting kids for nursery through draw of lots. It has said that school admissions were different from a lottery or a housing scheme.

"School education should not be compared to or made to appear like a housing scheme or selection of a lottery number," Delhi Public School Society's officiating secretary Sheila Markan said in an afidavit filed before a bench of Justice D K Jain and Justice R S Bhat of the Delhi High Court.

The affidavit has been filed in response to the court's request for assistance from all bodies, individuals and schools interested in the matter.

The court is seized of a petition filed by three parents challenging a single bench judgement, which had on January 12 last year rejected the plea against interviewing of children and their parents for nursery admissions.

Terming the idea as "purely a game of chance", which was in the nature of gambling, Markan said it was not in the interest of the child, the institution or education in general.

Denying that DPS conducted interviews for admission to nursery and pre-primary classes, DPSS favoured a standard assessment based on the interaction with the child and parents.

Earlier, the petitioners' counsel, Ashok Agrawal, and a public study group on Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) Committees had suggested that schools should follow neighbourhood policy for kids' admission and decide it through a transparent draw of lots.
