Cong workers demonstrate, ask Gandhi to be PM

May 18, 2004 16:50 IST

Hundreds of Congress workers on Tuesday demonstrated outside the party president Sonia Gandhi's residence as news came of her reluctance to accept the prime minister's office.

Several party office-bearers, including Satyajit Gaekwad, K K Sharma, Jaikishan, Mirza Irshad Beg, R P N Singh and Bihar PCC president Ram Jatan Sinha, joined the workers shouting slogans like -- 'Sonia lao, desh bachao', 'Sonia Gandhi apna faisla wapas lo'.

Denouncing statements made by rival Bharatiya Janata Party leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Uma Bharati opposing Gandhi's bid for the prime minister's office, the angry protestors shouted: 'Sushma, Uma hai, hai.'

With every passing moment, the crowd outside 10, Janpath swelled.
