Former deputy prime minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Lal Kishenchand Advani, on Wednesday said the party must forge a closer partnership with the 'Sangh Parivar' workers to widen its mass base.

He also exhorted party workers to visit their constituencies regularly and carry out development work.

Advani said the "arrogance" of some BJP MPs and their reluctance to meet the needs of their constituencies had cost the party dear in the last general election.

He said local issues in several states overtook the national issues, leading to the party's poor performance.

Advani also said that the BJP's many achievements -- infrastructural development, comfortable forex reserves, tight control over inflation and generation of employment opportunities -- could not be converted into national issues.

Exhorting party members to strengthen the organisation and establish a rapport with the people of their constituencies, he said: "We will take RSS along with us in our future journey as RSS is 'mool sansthan' of BJP."
