Naidu protests petrol hike, cycles to assembly

June 21, 2004 18:08 IST

TDP MLAs today protested against the petrol hike by cycling to the Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly for the first day of the budget session. They also demanded a roll back in the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders.

TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu led the cycle rally from NTR Ghat in Hyderabad after paying floral tributes to party founder and former chief minister N T Rama Rao.

TDP's women legislators registered their protest by carrying an LPG cylinder in a cycle rickshaw.

"The UPA government has shown its anti-people stance within 30 days of taking over the reins by increasing the prices of essential goods. We will raise this issue in both the Parliament and the assembly," Naidu, who wore the party's trademark yellow shirt and scarf, said.

He added that the Congress had set aside its poll promises of taking care of every section of society. He accused it of shifting to the opportunism mode and resorting to anti-people policies by heaping burdens on the common man.

Demanding an immediate rollback, Naidu said the TDP would continue to agitate till the prices were brought down.
