June 19, 2004 15:19 IST

The Gujarat police on Saturday denied pressuring Shamima Jahan Shaikh, mother of Ishrat Shaikh, the teenager who was killed in a police encounter along with three other alleged militants on June 15, to make certain statements.

Denying Shaikh's statement made in Mumbra before her daughter's final rites, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) D G Vanjhara said, "We did not compel or pressure her in any way. We put forward a set of questions based on specific intelligence inputs and other information that we have and got the answers."

He also denied that the Crime Branch had leaked any information about the interrogation to a section of media. "They had already got information from intelligence agencies."
