An American was shot dead in the Saudi capital of Riyadh  on  Tuesday, a US embassy spokesman here told AFP.

"The person who was killed was an American," he said. The victim could not be identified until the next of kin had been notified,  the spokesman said.

Dubai-based Al-Arabiya television earlier reported that a foreigner, believed to be an American, had been shot dead in Riyadh.  The man was killed as he left a clinic on Electricity Street in eastern  Riyadh's Gulf district, the satellite channel said, quoting its correspondent in the capital.
