June 03, 2004 12:19 IST

Friends, well wishers and party workers greeted Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M Karunanidhi, who turned 81 on Thursday.

A large number of DMK workers formed a queue at the party office in Chennai to greet Karunanidhi.

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had on Wednesday wished Karunanidhi 'a long and healthy life in the service of the nation'.

Earlier in the morning, Karunanidhi, accompanied by DMK Union ministers and party leaders, visited the memorials of Periyar E V Ramasamy and DMK founder, late C N Annadurai, to pay tributes.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief G K Vasan, Communist Party of India leader R Nallakannu and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader N Varadarajan were among those who greeted Karunanidhi.

The day is being celebrated as Democratic Progressive Alliance's 'victory day' in Tamil Nadu. The DMK-led DPA won all the seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry in the recent Lok Sabha election.
