Curfew relaxed for 13 hours in Manipur valley

Indefinite curfew clamped in parts of the Manipur valley since July 15 following the tension over the custodial death of Th Manorama Devi, was relaxed today for 13 hours, official sources said.

Curfew was relaxed for 13 hours from 4 am today in Imphal and Greater Imphal areas of Imphal East, Imphal West and parts of Thoubal and Bishenpur districts, they said.

However, reports from the districts said protests against the killing and demand for the immediate withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 still continued in various parts of the state.

On July 15, women activists stripped during a demonstration before the Assam Rifles office in Manipur capital protesting against Manorama Devi's killing allegedly by security forces. Rape us, kill us, take our flesh they shouted while attempting to break open the gate of the Assam Rifles range office in Imphal, despite indefinite curfew in Imphal and Greater Imphal areas.
