July 26, 2004 15:42 IST

Cross-examinations of police officials and further proceedings of the Godhra riot inquiry Commission was postponed on Monday following a request in this regard from the Gujarat government, which said the terms of reference and period of the Commission had been expanded recently.

The Gujarat government application seeking postponement urged the Commission to invite the public to file affidavits about riot incidents that occurred between April 1 and May 31, 2002.

Justice (retd) K G Shah, of the two-man Commission, told PTI that it would hear the state government's application on Tuesday and make further announcement about the schedule and the cross-examination later.

The Commission had summoned two senior Gujarat police officials on Monday for cross-examination but the proceedings were called off following the state government's application seeking postponement.
