NDA unhappy with Somnath's 'attitude and behaviour'

July 23, 2004 12:27 IST

The National Democratic Alliance on Friday appeared heading towards a confrontation with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee protesting against his "attitude and behaviour" vis-a-vis the opposition alliance in the House.

Leaders of the alliance, at a meeting in Delhi this morning, also decided to stall proceedings of both Houses of Parliament on the issue of the arrest warrants against "absconding" Coal Minister Sibu Soren till Prime Minister Manmohan Singh makes a statement.

Emerging out of the meeting, presided over by Leader of Opposition Lal Kishenchand Advani, BJP Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha V K Malhotra told PTI that a delegation of NDA leaders would meet the Speaker later in the day to lodge their protest against  his "attitude and behaviour" towards the NDA legislators.

The NDA leaders also took strong exception to the Speaker informing the media about the tape recordings of the proceedings he sent to Advani on the "behaviour" of the opposition MPs in the House.

"He has not sent any letter as reported. He has only sent a tape and that was a confidential communication not to be publicised," Malhotra said.

According to reports, Chatterjee wrote a letter to Advani appealing to him to help restore order in the House.

"As elected representatives, members must ensure serving the people of the country, who are the real masters of Parliament," reports quoted Chatterjee as saying in the letter.

The BJP leader said NDA would be showing the recordings to the Speaker on how he was "conducting" the House.

The opposition leaders would be conveying to the Speaker their "utter displeasure" over his "spewing venom" against the previous NDA Government at a function organised by the Bar Council of India on Wednesday, Malhotra said.

On the issue of Soren, the NDA leaders decided to continue with their protest "as yesterday".

NDA sources said the opposition would continue to stall the proceedings till the prime minister makes a statement on the issue in Parliament.
