Two government offices set ablaze in Manipur

July 21, 2004 14:23 IST

Two government offices were set ablaze by unknown persons even as indefinite curfew was relaxed for seven hours from 5 am this morning in various parts of the four valley districts of Manipur, official sources said on Wednesday.

Unidentified persons set afire the Government Veterinary Buffalo Farm and office at Wabgai in Thoubal district and the Gram Panchayat office in Bishenpur district late last night.

With this, the number of government offices set afire in the state during the current spell of agitation arising out of the alleged killing of Manorama Devi by Assam Rifles has gone up to nine, sources said.

Sources said security measures have been tightened in curfew-bound areas of the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishenpur.

Meanwhile, the Federal Party of Manipur legislator L Ibomcha Singh was today arrested along with several supporters for demanding withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, by defying curfew near the Raj Bhavan, official sources said.

Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal, who is in Manipur, was staying at the Raj Bhavan. Irengbam Hemochandra Singh, another FPM MLA, had been arrested in front of Raj Bhavan yesterday on the same ground and had later been released.
