Mohd Shahabuddin, an MP of Bihar's ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal, was on Tuesday shifted from the Siwan Jail Hospital and put behind bars to comply with a directive of the Patna high court.

The court had on Monday taken serious note of the fact that despite its order to imprison him, Shahabuddin had been admitted to the jail hospital.

Siwan's District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police informed the court that the MP, who is named in several cases, including that of murder, was admitted to the jail hospital on the recommendation of a medical team.

The court then issued clear cut orders to put him behind bars immediately.

The Rediff Interview/ Mohammad Shahabuddin

In June, Shahabuddin, whom even RJD chief and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav keeps in good humour, had obtained permission from a Fast Track Court in Siwan to visit Delhi and take oath as member of the Lok Sabha.

Later, he had obtained permission from the Fast Track Court to attend the Budget session of the Lok Sabha.

However, when the Patna high court learnt about it through media reports it ordered that he be put behind bars ruling that the Fast Track Court had acted beyond its jurisdiction. Following the censure, Fast Track Court judge A P Shrivastava resigned.

Shahabuddin is facing as many as 38 cases and has been chargesheeted in 26 of them. The high court had earlier rejected Shahabuddin's bail petition in connection with the abduction and murder of CPI-ML (Liberation) member Munna Chaudhary in 2001 in Siwan.
