Nine men rape three women of a Dalit family

July 10, 2004 16:24 IST

Three women of a Dalit family were dragged out of their house and allegedly gang raped by nine men in a village in Madhya Pradesh's Seoni district. Eight suspects have been arrested.

The accused barged into the house of Govardhan, a small farmer, in Bhomatola village late Friday night and dragged his wife, sister-in-law and daughter-in-law out and raped them, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Chhindwara Range) R P Singh said.

The gang rape was suspected to be a revenge for the alleged elopement of a 15-year-old girl, belonging to the same caste as the suspects, with Govardhan's 20-year-old son, Nitesh, Singh said.

The women have been admitted to the Seoni district hospital.

The district administration has announced a compensation of Rs 100,000 to the victims.
