Tusker goes berserk; high drama in Delhi

July 05, 2004 17:41 IST

An elephant went berserk on Monday on a busy road in the national capital, attacking vehicles and causing panic before being overpowered after a two-hour drama.

Traffic was disrupted on the busy Bhairon Road near Pragati Maidan at around 1430 IST as the pachyderm attacked vehicles prompting panic-stricken people to send desperate messages to the Police Control Room.

Hordes of police personnel, including those from the traffic wing, rushed to the spot. A number of 'mahauts' were also called in to help.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mukesh Kumar Meena, who was among those to rush to the scene, had a narrow escape as the elephant turned towards his vehicle. But his driver managed to steer clear of the elephant.

After over two hours, police and mahauts managed to overpower the elephant and chained it.

Nobody was injured though a few vehicles were damaged in the incident.
