This was disclosed on Saturday by Congress spokesman Anand Sharma at a press conference in New Delhi.

On Wednesday, Karunakaran had made public his intentions to form a new group and contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections independent of the Congress.

If that announcement was a pressure tool to get his son into the state Cabinet , it has worked just fine.

Anand Sharma said Muraleedharan will soon tender his resignation from the PCC chief's post.

Asked if Muraleedharan's induction was aimed at pacifying Karunakaran, Sharma said: "I hope the step works in that direction."
