Ahmedabad gang rape: Cops to reconstruct events

January 20, 2004 16:56 IST

The Gujarat police have sought the help of the Crime Branch to reconstruct the sequence of events in the alleged gang rape of an Ahmedabad girl on New Year's eve following which she committed suicide.

Considering the case as a 'jigsaw puzzle', it has divided the work in such a manner that different departments are probing various aspects of the case to nail the culprits at the earliest, Additional Commissioner of Police Keshav Kumar told PTI adding, "I will be investigating into the part about the telephone conversations.

"Only about five per cent of the work remains to be done. The crime branch will work on the reconstruction of the case as they have more experience in such matters."

Police has arrested four of the accused, including prime suspect Delhi-based businessman Sajal Jain, and a hunt is on for the fifth, Jain's Ajmer-based brother-in-law identified as Dharmendra alias Karan Jain. The police have located his house in Ajmer and procured his photograph. They suspect he is now in Agra.

Crime Branch officials had interrogated Sajal Jain on Monday, police sources said. Jain, who was remanded to police custody till January 21, has been 'cooperating' during his interrogation and has reportedly given a 'detailed account' of the incidents that occurred that night.

Police are awaiting the results of the medical tests conducted on him, including the DNA finger printing tests that were to be conducted by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). They have seized his vehicle from Delhi and FSL officials have conducted tests on it to find traces of any stains left behind, the sources added.
