Mt Everest base camp among best tourist spots

January 15, 2004 23:12 IST

A study by the United Kingdom's Observer magazine has rated the Mt Everest base camp as the seventh best tourist destination in the world, the Nepal Tourism Board said in a release in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Situated at an altitude of 5,400metres above sea level (ASL), it attracts some 20-30,000 tourists, many of whom aspire to scale the world's highest peak, every year.

A visit to the place has also been listed among the 20 best 'journeys of a lifetime'. It is the only South Asian destination in the list.

Those who plan to scale the 8,848metres Mt Everest usually spend two to three months at the base camp to get acclimatised.
