After bars, raids on matka dens in Mumbai

Continuing its crackdown on illegal activities in the city, the Mumbai police raided matka (gambling) dens and single-digit lottery centres on Wednesday night, arresting 176 persons and confiscating lottery tickets worth Rs 1,800,000, police sources said on Thursday.

The raids were mainly confined to the southern and eastern parts of the city while one case each was registered in the north and west of the metropolis too.

Police also raided a beauty parlour on Wednesday evening in west Mumbai and arrested five persons under the Immoral Traffic Act.

The action comes a day after raids on 62 dancing bars and beauty parlours in Mumbai in which close to 1,000 people, including over 700 bar-maids, were detained.
