NRI girl molested in Mumbai

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Mumbai | February 12, 2004 19:36 IST

A non-resident Indian girl was molested by one of her friends in suburban Andheri, Mumbai on Thursday.

The girl, from the United States, had come to Mumbai in December to visit her family members and friends.

Sanjay Bhatti, the accused, took the girl out with her friends for a late night party in suburban Bandra. He then brought the girl alone to his house on the pretext of a late night drink.

"Unaware of his intention she was trapped by Bhatti," Deputy Commissioner of Police Bipin Kumar Singh said. "She was then molested and he attempted to rape the girl. Luckily she overpowered him soon and escaped."

Though the incident took place early February 8, the girl complained to the police only on February 12.

"We don't know why she kept quite for so long but we have arrested Bhatti who has been put in police custody till February 28," said Singh.

Bhatti has been charged under sections 307 and 342 of the Indian Penal Code.
