December 28, 2004 15:44 IST

About 300 people are reportedly stranded on a narrow strip of land off Oachira in Kerala's Alappuzha district. Efforts are on to rescue them.

A diving team of the Indian Navy started rescue operations on Monday and one Coast Guard ship is providing assistance, an official spokesman said.

One ship has been put on standby at Kochi, he said.
