Management college 'spammed' with porn mail

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar | December 16, 2004 20:33 IST

The Bhubaneswar-based Xavier Institute of Management has been trying to manage a strange case lately, with little success.

The college email inboxes are being barraged by a torrent of porn mail!

The institute has asked the police to end the menace, which has been going on for a month now.

It is causing great inconvenience to the students, teachers and administrative staff, an official said, adding that attempts to block these messages have been in vain.

"The mails would simply start coming from different email addresses," institute administrator S S Rath told rediff.com.

"The mails are in text format and contain obscene material. We know spam is not uncommon, but these are different. Although we initially thought they were spam and blocked them, they did not cease," he said.

"We suspect this to be the handiwork of some miscreants, who are purposely targetting the institute with their mischievous behaviour," he said.

Police have registered a case and referred the matter to the cyber crimes cell for further investigation, district superintendent of police Amitav Thakur said.
