50 killed in Mukerian train mishap: Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has put the number of those killed in the head on collision between two passenger trains near Mukerian at 50 and of the injured at around 150.

The trains involved were the Jammu Tawi-Ahmedabad Express and Jalandhar-Pathankot Diesel Multiple Unit passenger train.

Singh made this statement in the state assembly in Chandigarh on Tuesday afternoon as the house met on the opening day of its brief winter session. There has been substantial damage to four bogies of the two trains.

The house observed silence for two minutes. The chief minister and Assembly Speaker Kewal Krishan were proceeding to the spot. Mukerian is Krishan's assembly constituency. It falls in Hoshiarpur district.
