December 11, 2004 22:58 IST

Tanvir Ahmed, who allegedly set ablaze his lover, a post-Godhra communal riot witness, on Tuesday over compensation money, has been arrested, police said on Saturday.

Bibi Bano is battling for life in an Ahmedabad hospital with 55% burns.

She is a witness to the Naroda-Patiya massacre in 2002 and had received about Rs 350,000 compensation after losing her husband, daughter and six relatives in the riots. She had deposited the money in a bank.

Ahmed was allegedly demanding that money. He had been threatening her for several days and she had lodged a police complaint following which he was arrested and later released on bail.

In her complaint, Bano said that on Tuesday, the accused doused her in kerosene and torched her in Vatva area of Ahmedabad.

"Ahmed was arrested on Friday after the police got a tip-off. He has denied Bano's allegations. We are investigating the case," Vatva police sub-inspector S M parmar said.
