Kanchi seer's remand in murder case extended

A Kanchipuram court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati in the Sankararaman murder case till December 23.

First Class Judicial Magistrate G Uthamaraj extended the remand through video-conferencing from the Chengalpattu sessions court in the afternoon.

The magistrate extended the remand after questioning the seer about his health.

Sankararaman, who was the manager of the Kanchipuram Varadharaja Perumal temple, was murdered on September 3.

The seer was arrested on November 11 in connection with the case. He has been lodged in the Vellore prison since then.

The Tamil Nadu government had last year introduced the video-conferencing facility for extending the remand of prisoners, to avoid the cumbersome procedure of transporting them between jails and courts.
