Vadodara police summon Zahira Sheikh

August 31, 2004 16:04 IST

Zahira Sheikh, the main witness in the Best Bakery case, has been summoned by the Vadodara police in connection with a complaint filed by her brother, Nafitullah, against Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Madhu Srivastav.

The complaint accuses Srivastav and three others of putting pressure on Nafitullah to turn hostile during the Best Bakery trial in a fast-track court last year.

"We have sent summons and telephonically informed Zaheera's custodian in Mumbai, Teesta Setalvad," Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha told PTI.

Zahira too had filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court alleging she and her family were threatened by Srivastav, his brother, Chandrakant alias Bhathu, and two others when the case was being heard in Vadodara.

Zahira and almost every other witness had turned hostile during the trial, following which all the 21 accused were acquitted.

The Gujarat high court upheld the acquittal, but the Supreme Court quashed it and ordered a retrial in Maharashtra.

Fourteen people were killed when miscreants set fire to Best Bakery on March 1 at the height of the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.
